Managing projects often involves organizing tasks into logical groups. The Indent and Outdent options help structure tasks by creating or removing task hierarchies.

What is Indent?

The Indent option is used to move a task under another task, converting it into a subtask.

When a task is indented:

  • It becomes a child task of the task above it.
  • A parent–child relationship is created.
  • The parent task represents a broader activity, while indented tasks represent smaller steps within it.
  • Project plans become easier to organize and understand.

Example:

  • Project Planning (Parent Task)
    • Requirement Gathering (Subtask)
    • Design Discussion (Subtask)

Indenting helps break large activities into manageable pieces.

To set the Indent, select the task and right-click on it. From the menu that appears, choose the Indent option. The selected task will become a child (subtask) of the previous task.

What is Outdent?

The Outdent option is used to remove a task from its parent task.

When a task is outdented:

  • The task moves back to the main task level.
  • The parent–child relationship is removed.
  • The task becomes an independent task again.

Example:

  • Requirement Gathering (Subtask) → Outdent → becomes a Main Task

To outdent a task, select the task and right-click on it to open the menu. Choose the Outdent option. The task will move back to the main level and will no longer be a child of the previous task.

Benefits of Using Indent and Outdent

  • Organizes tasks hierarchically
  • Improves project structure and readability
  • Helps manage complex projects efficiently
  • Clearly defines main tasks and subtasks

When to Use

  • Use Indent when a task is part of a larger activity.
  • Use Outdent when a task should no longer belong to a parent task.

Note: You can also use the Indent and Outdent buttons available in the top-right corner of the screen to set tasks as indented or outdent.
